Brief: This Scottish family required a full refurbishment of their existing Barn Yard in North London. The barn was extended to the rear and to the side in keeping with the existing architecture. The client’s key criteria for the interior were to maximise natural lighting, to keep the interior family-friendly, and to create a unified feel to the 2 storey property.

A barn conversion is one of the most coveted types of home in Britain yet can be notoriously hard to get right. The barn has been turned into a spacious, show-stopping home. The original timbers all needed replacing, resulting in the stunning vaulted bedrooms with exposed beams on the top floor. The timbers where impressive as it opened the height of the building, creating a bright and airy living space.

We managed to create an airy upper floor with an open plan kitchen, living room and dining room while the ground floor had two spacious en suite bedrooms, opening out on to the courtyard. Powered by 100% renewable energy sources using the finest natural building materials, the thick cob and stone walls keep the barn cool in the summer, while the eco-insulation and biomass powered underfloor heating ensures a cosy winter.
